As children, in order to survive our childhood we might have to tell ourselves lies about the people around us. It's a 7 of Cups situation when we need a delusion in order to survive. For me, seeing the truth about my mother has taken a lifetime and it is still unfolding. As a little girl, I had no one to keep me safe. I deluded myself into believing my mother was my refuge. After more than 50 years I am clearly seeing how she never protected me, that I needed to believe she cared about me in order to survive. Now, I realize that my idea of safety had a really low standard. After raising three daughters of my own I still did not see the truth. Entering the doorway of my "golden years" seems to be what is waking me up. As a little girl, she knew my father was raping me but she still sent me to be with him. There was no court order stating she had to send me to be with him. She let him back in the house so many times. As an adult, she stood my raging, narcissistic husband to have my daughter taken away from me then later had all my contact with her ended while simultaneously telling me she was supportive of my relationship with her. She wanted to be alone with her boyfriends and her new husband so I had to have sex with her first husband. Fortunately, I have discovered multiple venues for healing and managing the resulting Complex PTSD.
