During the 4th, 5th and 6th grade occasionally my father would drop me off at the front of the school, about half an hour late. It was a 7 of Wands childhood in so many ways. One of these times he called the school and told my teachers to paddle me for not arriving to school on time. Looking back, this was one of his many methods to draw the dirty attention off of him and make the world believe I was bad so no one would really care about me, to make him look like the shining one. I am sure no one at the Roscoe Wilson Elementary School in Lubbock, Texas ever imagined for one moment what was really going on. The truth is, I was the solid one, I was the strong one, I was the shining one because I kept my mouth shut and I took it all. I never told anyone at that school his dirty secret, why he was really bringing me to school late. Every day his disgusting filth weighed more heavily on me. Sure, I wanted to die. I often thought about how I could kill myself. I always thought about how I could run away but where could I go? Who could I trust to tell the truth to? Day in and out, night after night, this little girl learned to hold it all in, keep her mouth shut, and wait for the torture of being a child to pass. I became numb. I learned to feel nothing and accept that I am nothing better than Daddy's dirty thing. Now, that takes inner strength, resilience, perseverance, and courage.
